Polarity

A molecule is polar if it is charged, i.e. the molecule has an imbalance of electrons.

For a molecule to be polar, two conditions must be satisfied:

  1. It has an asymmetrical shape
  2. It contains polar bonds

Polar bonds

A polar bond is a covalent bond between two atoms of different electronegativities. The atom with the higher electronegativity is the more negative one, since it attracts electrons to its side of the bond more closely.
